On May 23, 1873 the first edition of the Preakness took place becoming now one of the most famous horse race around the United States. Now is the second most important race of the Triple Crown Race competition. It is usually celebrated two weeks after the Kentucky Derby and this time the date is May the 16th and the purse is around $2,000,000.
The Preakness was founded by Maryland governor Oden Bowie, who named the then mile and a half race in honor of the colt named “Preakness” from Milton Holbrook in New Jersey. That horse deserved the honor to have the race on its name because it won the Dinner Party Stakes on the day Pimlico Race Course opened on October 25, 1870.
There is around 150000 people attending the race that day and since is one of the favorite ones in the United States, there are lots of advertisement going around about that important date for the horse competitions. One of the most interesting details about this 134th edition of the race is that the winner of the Kentucky Derby: “Mine That Bird”, is going to run this time with high odds to win the race. What is amazing is the energy that the horse had back last week at Churchill Downs and every body is expecting the same power rush this time.
The horse won for more than 5 lengths and everyone’s hopes are up, waiting for the same result on this second leg of the Triple Crown. Besides Mine That Bird, another horse that is promising a good job during the race is Musket Man which is consider one of the favorite horses to get in the first 3 places at the end of the race.
2009 Preakness Stakes 134 Results
The results for the Preakness Stakes are really interesting. The hope was on “Mine That Bird” and “Pioneer of the Nile” but there was a twist in the performance of the horses and the favorite got the second place. This time the winner was “Rachel Alexandra”, followed by the Kentucky Derby champion, “Mine That Bird” and “Musket Man” in the third place. Hopefully in the Breeder’s Cup the Favorite of the Triple Crown this year will show what it is made of with another victory.
